what a week...
First, Nelson Mandela's passing -- somehow made close for me because my favourite novelist used to be South African and wrote his best work as a self-reflective, scathingly honest critique of apartheid, and also because the pastor who founded my church is South African, and i suspect that if not for the country's political troubles, he might never have come here to Singapore, and i would not have such a wonderful church to call my own. He spoke so movingly about Mandela at the start of today's sermon.
.
And now, the Little India riot -- a man killed in an accident, and then the mob takes over and before you know it, burning cars, people injured...
.
There's something linking all of this -- something about injustice, and poverty, and discrimination, and the consequences thereof. Something about what happens when a country loses sight of what is truly important.
