education
Singaporeans are generally obsessed with education, or rather, with the question of the outcomes of education: grades, and the things that grades can or cannot buy us.
.
i'm starting to think that the main purpose of education is to teach young people how to deal with Reality. And by 'Reality', i really do mean, the whole of reality. So that would encompass traditional academic subjects like the arts, humanities and sciences (diplomatically listed in alphabetical order, so as to avoid any suggestion that any of these is more important than the other), as well as other, more intangible things, such as the Reality of what enables genuine human flourishing in light of our individual and collective capacities and limitations.
.
It seems to me that this is life's greatest and most meaningful challenge: to understand Reality, and know how best to deal with it.
