poet of the piano
So there's this kid in the place i'm teaching in now who spends his free periods practising the difficult bits of Chopin's 1st Piano Concerto on one of the common-area pianos around the school. Ok, maybe 'practising' is not quite the right word -- he's already pretty good, so perhaps he's more like 'showing off'. i'm pretty sure he knows he's good. Not that i'm complaining -- it's nice to hear some well-played Chopin after hours of marking bad writing.

Something about this school that seems to encourage musical talent. The last time i taught here, there was another kid who used to spend his free periods on that very same piano. He played all kinds of pieces -- but i do remember once hearing him working on Beethoven's 4th Piano Concerto. That kid was much friendlier, and, i think, humbler in manner, than the current one. He told me that he was applying for admission to conservatories in the US after his A levels. i hope he found his way there eventually.

there's a student hall here in our university that was built in the 1900s and is full of spacious quiet study areas. it's also right next to the bus stop i use to get home... most nights, when it gets too cold to wait for the bus outside, students step back into the building. one of the study areas has a grand piano and there is always someone playing, no matter how late it is at night...and i've spent so many hours in the past year waiting for the bus listening to the melodies along with a few students here and there, in our winter coats, leaning against the wall outside the study, not wanting to disturb the player inside and ready to leave when the bus comes. but there's something about public spaces like that, listening to the pieces being played that is always so intimate, so lovely. this entry reminded me of that.
also, a whimsical film i enjoyed a few years ago, that you might enjoy
