fanatic fandom

My other blog is a BMW. But this is a bandanna-pink Volkswagen Beetle - for flirty frivolous fun and fanatic fandom. This is where i get to play the bimbonic-geek and rave, enthuse, bitch and rant about anything and everything under the sun. Feel free to chip in!

two days

Two meetings with two sets of old friends in two days.
.
i was just wondering yesterday whether there's any point in continuing to hold on to friendships with people whose values and interests you no longer share, just for old times' sake. Sometimes you find yourselves in opposing camps: each one feeling (and probably being!) judged by the other, and any real trust dissipated. Are these relationships even worthy of the name, 'friendship'?
.
Part of me very much wants to believe in this concept of for old times' sake, but when one no longer shares anything with said friends except a common past that is now dead and gone, doesn't the resulting standstill mean that these are friendships where nothing is growing and everything is just a stagnant remnant of an increasingly-distant past?
.
And then there are those friendships that endure because, over the years, you continue growing in the same direction, and you find yourself standing side-by-side, facing the world together. It's nice to spend time with people who see the world as you see it. Even as you know that to surround yourself with such congenial company wouldn't be good either -- too much of a good thing and you end up living in a bubble / ghetto, and closing off a balanced view of the world. Still, it's nice to spend time over rojak and char kway teow nattering away about Life, the Universe, and Everything, and to know that as empires topple and the world as you have known it for as long as you've known it careens toward the precipice of irrevocable change, some things (it seems) will continue to stand fast and endure.
