unsustainable
Record temperatures these last 2 months. Scorching afternoons that leave you feeling parched and thirsty no matter how much water you drink. Hot, windless nights which do little to relieve the discomfort.
.
The only escape is to turn on the aircon at full blast. Imagine a whole island-city with its airconditioning on at full blast -- imagine the energy usage, the heat generated and released into the atmosphere.
.
This place is unsustainable. Already it's getting more and more built-up, so that it's getting rarer and rarer to be able to see an unobstructed view of the sky. The tarmac sizzles like an oil-less griddle, and every inch of concrete acts as a slow-burning heat-trap. The trains are now crowded even when it's not rush-hour -- when did this become my country? Taking late-night trains is such a pleasure because you can actually enjoy the trains, which, everything considered, are still in pretty good shape. It's so nice to be able to see them without all the crowds -- there's a calm and quiet, an un-stuffiness, that is absent at other times.
.
But generally, yes. We can't keep going like this.
